645 PRO Mk III App Reviews

Does not work on iPad 3

Strange that Apple does not allow us to install that nice app to our iPad 3!!!

Not really pro...

Sorry dude, I shoot a lot of pro bodies, and this isnt it. User interface is very fiddly, especially the dials which are impossible on iPhone. Crops and fancy effects are useless on a pro camera, everything is better done in post-production. The only thing which is remarkable is the promise of RAW data from the (decent) iPhone sensor, but it does not work out, Im afraid. TIFFs show the same artefacts from noise reduction/over-sharpening as stock JPEGs. JPEGs from this app are *much* worse than stock camera app.

Good app, dev is capable of better

I recently stopped using a battery case with my iPhone and using 645 as my main app I thought my phone was broken. Soon realized it just has AWFUL power management. Image quality is good, devs app record is great. No doubt it will be worth the cost. Just not yet.

Cant save when phone is locked, annoying EXIF data

This is my app of choice when taking "serious" photos. The app is easy to use and I appreciate having all the controls available on-screen instead of buried away in a settings menu. Two things prevent me from giving it five stars, however. First is that unlike the stock camera app, 645 PRO does not save if the phone is locked, so you have to wait for it to finish saving before you turn off your phone (wait for the triangle at bottom left to turn white) or youll lose your last photo(s). The other is that "jag.gr" is inserted as the camera make and "645 PRO" as the camera model in EXIF data, which defeats my ability to search for iPhone photos in Lightroom (I use ExifTool to reset the EXIF data to "Apple" and "iPhone 4S" to eliminate this annoyance).

Unreliable.

Great interface, nice idea, but not 100% reliable. Crashes and/or fails to save images. I gave it a good chance, but need a camera that is not going to lose my exposures and make me miss the shot!

Awful Camera App!!!!

Dont waste your money with this app! Doesnt work 90% of the time. So promising but such a shame!!!

Sub par

Purchased to get an idea of the iPhone 5s ISO/shutter programming. Works well for reading the exposure values but thats it. The exposure lock being separate from the focus lock is handy, but only once in a while. Interface is awkward thanks To miniature buttons and tiff output really doesnt come out any better than stock. Slow, hogs battery life and the iPhone 5 runs very hot even with 645pro being the only open app. The stock camera app is much better overall and much more powerful IMHO. If I had the option to manually select a ISO (please apple, make the api happen) then it would be a much more powerful app. As is, its just an expensive light meter.

An interesting camera app that mixes two objectives in a very awkward way

The first objective, and the one that interests me the most, is to the ability to get TIFFs without lossy compression from the iPhone camera. It will save these to the Camera Roll and then you can view and edit them in Aperture on a Mac, without any problem. There is another app called CCD that does this very nicely so try that if all you want are raw TIFFs. The second objective is to give the user a standard camera interface with rotating dials and LCD displays, and the ability to produce jpegs that mimic classic types of film. This interface is very hard to use because the dials are miniscule. On a real camera, the dials have a tactile feel and your finger naturally stays with the dial, even if you arent looking. With the 645 app, the dials are much smaller and it is very hard to rotate a tiny dial when your finger keeps falling off. The problem with the app is that the second objective makes it hard to achieve the first objective. To get TIFFs, you first have to read the whole manual to learn that you want to do this in something called Q mode. Then you have to reread the manual to find out how to get into Q mode and how to set up Q mode to produces TIFFs or TIFFs and/or jpegs. Then, you have to learn how to get the pictures off of the iPhone, since it defaults to downloading the pictures as data specific to the app, rather than the Camera Roll. If you do these things in the wrong sequence, you are hosed. You have to do everything in the right order. It is a very modal app. What would I like to see in this app? A simple big, well labelled, button that tells me how to go into a mode that produces TIFFs and puts them on the camera roll, while leaving the user only with the controls to set the spot focus and spot metering, and the shutter button. The histogram would be nice. So, that can be done with a Heads Up Display, as in Aperture with a well-defined button telling you how to switch it on and off. The final touch would be to put the instructions for this in a separate chapter of the manual entitled: "How to get TIFF output the easy way"

No Support

Doesnt even support iPhone4S on iOS6. Doesnt even open. How do we claim refund for this?

Top notch!

Im very impressed. As Im learning about photography, I can play with this any time I want.

Awesome

This is awesome...when shooting HDR for my iPhone 5, with the regular camera, and then with 645 pro, 645 pro is better! Quality looks great, and for $2.99, its magical. Thanks Mike! It doesnt crash, so the recent update must have fixed that. Bring your charger as it drains battery. Well, we cant be too picky!

Cant take a picture without crashing

I lost quite a few good shots. Unreliable.

wanted to love it...

I wanted to love this app, mostly because it can export a fat tiff, but it has a couple major issues I just couldnt get over. The app crashed pretty frequently, often didnt manage to take a photo at all though it seemed to, and sometimes the shutter just wouldnt work, forcing me to restart the app. The back end is beautiful, but if I cant quickly take a photo (and be sure it saved!) then I cant use the app.

From 5 star to 1 star

The fact the developer of my favorite camera apps thought it was ok to change the icon of his app to this absolutely ugly design that ruins any & all appeal to want to use the app is such a disappointment. Until he stops listening to complete morons & changes the icon back to its original icon, then this app is NOT worthy of installing on your iPhone!

Favourite camera

This is my go to camera app it just takes great pictures and I love the interface feels just like a real camera and as for the new icon well it dose stand out amongst other icons but I dont think it dose the app itself justice I think the icon is very important to an app because its the first impression a person gets when shopping around so it has to sell, I think it could be more professional looking but because I already know how good this app is it wouldnt matter to me if it was a cucumber. Thanks for this.

Much better then it looks!!

Got this app to be able to "take" photos 4x6 (6x9 same same) for my Selphy printer, not crop them afterwards. This was the only app I could find to do this. I also like the focus lock and the adjustments to the photos are done live, which is nice. Just needs AirPrint and it will be the best!!!

Outrageous!

I started with Mikes 6x6 app, which remains pretty amazing. But this one? There is nothing like it. Incredible imaging options made for photographers. So many camera apps out there are just filter packages. Not this. 645 is a true camera system. Ive been through them all in the last five years. This one is tops. Gotta mention the regular, meaningful updates and the incredible support. Mikes fans are truly dedicated to his apps and have created a couple of FB pages to share photos and techniques.

Adding a real shutter please!

I am a freelance photographer and had been using 645PRO throughout the last 3 years. Side by side with my camera gadgets, I prefer this app to take street shots instead of my digital SLR. I love this because it is not intimidating but has all the features of a professional medium-format camera, viz. filters, different film back, AE, AF & WB lock etc. As your app emphasizes the similar function of a 645PRO, I feel bad to see that it lacks the feature of a real camera shutter! It still requires your touching the screen to fire a shutter. This may a problem to many people. In this respect, iPhones camera excels your program by adding the option of using the volume +/- button to take a photo as an alternative, though not many iPhone users know about this. By holding iPhone with the shutter turned to the top edge resembles the feel of a real camera! I hope 645PRO will have this real shutter feature added that will make this program look real and professional!

Best iPhone SLR

It shoots beautiful film like photos similar to that of the "Hipstamatic" app, maybe even better. Full control of ISO and shutter speed, different film types and lens filters are available which is great. For serious iPhoneography this is a must have. I personally like it because its a camera, not a post processing tool or a camera like Instagram or Oggl where you play around with a photo AFTER you hit the shutter button. This allows for Pure Photography; choose your lens filter and film, your format, your settings, and shoot. Thats it. You get a beautiful film quality image that requires ACTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY SKILL! What a concept! Love it.

Great App, Runs Hot

Great app, been following this from almost the beginning, it has come a long way in usability, and with the new iOS8 updates, in terms of functionality too! Strongly recommended for professional and semi-professional photographers. Full proper manuals controls are much welcomed in the latest update. One caveat though, the app eats battery like an alcoholic, and my phone tends to run very hot (iPhone 5) after a little bit of use. For the developers, keep it up, I’d recommend to focus on performance and battery use, by minimizing the impact on the CPU as much as possible. Cheers!
